Scottsdale Residence

The clients called on me to take their 6900 sf home from 2008 Tuscan to 2023 Transitional with sparkle.  Specifically to update the kitchen, add a wine cellar, rework the great room, primary bedroom and bathroom, theater, and powder room.   The clients have three large dogs that shed and 3 boys in college who return home in summers and holidays and like to entertain. The renovation had to withstand heavy use.  To meet the client’s needs I used materials that could withstand high traffic, tile surfaces with some sparkle, clean lines in the custom furnishings and cabinetry, and throughout the home we removed niches, 1/2 walls, and columns, squared certain archways, stained all the wood beams, doors, trim and cabinetry a dark walnut. I painted the whole home flat Greek Villa white, keeping the color the same on the ceiling to minimize the visual transition from soffits and archways.

There were 2 large corner fireplaces, one in the great room and one in the primary bedroom.  Both of which were removed and replaced with linear modern gas units.   One challenge was the client did not want to replace the flooring and when we removed ½ walls, fireplaces, and columns throughout the home we needed to match the existing travertine.  We ultimately had to source the stone from out of the country and have it custom cut as the existing tiles had no bevel and all current tiles on the market had an eased edge and were 1/16” off, and therefore wouldn’t line up, especially with the straight install.  The client also requested back-lit Crystallo for the island, finding a slab large enough to not have a seam took months and a nationwide search as all local slabs had too many rusty veins for the clean look we wanted.  I completed a full master bathroom renovation, giving the homeowner the spa-like retreat of her dreams.

In the kitchen we replaced all the upper cabinet doors and painted the frames white, adding an 18” top row with crown molding to balance the 14’ ceilings. Lucite and polished nickel hardware gave a modern flair, along with the custom steel hood painted Chantilly Lace Gloss with polished nickel straps, banding, and rivets.  We removed a dropped ceiling over the island and created a tray ceiling for 3 pendants.   The backlit Crystallo slab shimmers, complimenting the mother-of-pearl and dolomite mosaic backsplash that we carried to the ceiling.  Perimeter countertops are Silestone with a waterfall edge … as the client cooks extensively and needed a …worksurface.

The adjacent breakfast area had a built-in desk that we removed and opened up to both sides in order to install a double-sided wine cellar.  On the opposite side is the home’s main entry which allows light to pass all the way from the North of the home to the south through the breakfast area.  The side walls are led-lit Crystallo slab, offsetting the walnut x base cabinets and the lucite and brushed stainless racking system.
